Ghulam Nabi Azad Stopped at Srinagar Airport, Being Sent Back to Delhi as Kashmir Reels Under Curfew Amid Article 370 Abrogation

Earlier there were reports that Azad was expected to be sent back from the airport as he was set to travel to Srinagar today. Kashmir leaders including former Chief Ministers- Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti- have been kept under detention.

Srinagar, August 8:  Senior Congress MP and leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad and Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Gulam Ahmed Mir were stopped at Srinagar Airport on Thursday. Earlier there were reports that Azad was expected to be sent back from the airport as he was set to travel to Srinagar today. Kashmir leaders including former Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir- Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti- have been kept under detention. Jammu and Kashmir: Ghulam Nabi Azad Asks Modi Govt to Act Cautiously, Says Wrong Step Might Precipitate 'Deep Crisis'. 

Reports inform that Azad, a former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, has been sent back from airport at a time Section 144 is being imposed in the state. The incident comes days after the government diluted the Article 370 which provides special status to the state. With the historic decision, revoking Article 370 bifurcatates Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories - namely Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh.

On August 5, Union Home Minister Amit Shah scrapped Articles 370 and 35A through a presidential order in the Parliament. Responding to Home Minister Amit Shah's statement in the House, Azad accused the BJP of murdering the Constitution. Several Opposition parties staged a protest in the Parliament. PDP, Trinamool Congress, DMK MPs sat on dharna on the floor in the well of Rajya Sabhab after the government's decision.
