Ghazipur, December 31: The Uttar Pradesh police arrested at least 27 people till now in connection to the killing of police head constable Suresh Vats. The accused were part of the mob which pelted stones on the police after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally in Ghazipur. Vats had suffered fatal injuries in the stone-pelting. Earlier in the day, mortal remains of the head constable were taken to Prayagraj for last rites. Vats was deployed at Karimuddinpur police station in Ghazipur.
According to reports, the stone-pelters suspected to be from the Nishad community, which had organised massive protests ahead of Modi's rally, demanding an increase in their share of reservation in government jobs and educational institutions. Nishad Party chief Sanjay Kumar Nishad, however, refuted the charge of protesters affiliated to his outfit being involved in the stone-pelting incident.
It is the second incident in a month, where a mob has allegedly killed a police official. On December 3, a mob of at least 400 people violently rampaged in Siyana village after cattle carcasses were found in the nearby area. The ensuing mob in Bulandshahr claimed the life of a Police inspector Subodh Kumar Singh and Sumit Kumar, a local resident.
