Ghazipur, December 29: A Uttar Pradesh (UP) police constable was killed and two civilians were injured when a mob demanding reservation allegedly threw stones after the police tried to evacuate them from the road. The protest was organised by Nishad Party, said the police. UP Police Constable Suresh Vats Killed in Stone Pelting Incident in Ghazipur.

The incident took place when the police unit was returning from the rally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in the town for a rally on Saturday, reported news agency ANI.

The police had arrested some leaders of the Nishad Party as a precautionary measure in view of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally. This agitated the party cadre, who protested by throwing stones at the police group near Atwa Mor police booth.

Constable Suresh Vats got injured in the stone pelting and later succumbed to his injuries. Two civilians have also sustained injured in the stone pelting incident and have been admitted to district hospital.

Mahipal Pathak, CO, Sadar said that constable Suresh Vats was returning after completing his duty at the PM event today. But some people from Nishad community were protesting near Atwa Mor police station in Naunera area where stone pelting incident took place during which he was hit.

UP Chief Minister office said that "CM Yogi Adityanath has taken cognizance of the unfortunate death of constable Suresh Vats in Ghazipur in a stone pelting incident. The UP CMO said that Yogi Adityanath has announced Rs 40 lakhs compensation for the wife of the deceased constable Suresh Vats.

Meanwhile, Chatrapati Nishad of Nishad Party has said that they are demanding reservation for Nishads and spreading the message of reservation among their people. Nishad also said that starting from Allahabad (Prayagraj), they will march in the entire state of UP. "4 years have passed, but neither PM nor CM have fulfilled the demands of Nishads” said Chatrapati Nishad, while his supporters carried placards reading, "if reservation is not given to the community now, blood will be spilt on the roads."
