New Delhi, December 31: On Monday, Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat was appointed as the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of India by the Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet. Following which, the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, US Department of State has congratulated Rawat on his appointment. It said, "The position will help catalyze greater US-India 'joint' cooperation between our militaries."
The Chief of Defence Staff will be a four-star General and will head the Department of Military Affairs. The announcement came a day before General Rawat’s retirement as the Indian Army Chief. Reportedly, Gen Rawat will complete his full three-year term as the Chief of Army Staff on December 31. According to a government order, Gen Rawat has been appointed as the CDS with effect from December 31.
