Mumbai, Sep 24: A youth died after drowning in a pond while immersing an idol of lord Ganesha during Ganesh Visarjan on Sunday. The incident took place in Mumbai's Bhandup. The deceased, whose identity has not been revealed, was plunged into the pond to immerse the idol of lord Ganesha on the occassion of Ganesh Visarjan.
As many as 12 people died across Maharashtra during immersion of Ganesh idols in rivers and lakes. According to the Director General of Police's Control Room, Raigad and Jalna reported three drownings each while Satara and Bhandara witnessed two drownings each. One person died in Pimpri Chinchwad.
Five people were rescued from drowning by fire brigade officials at Mumbai's Girgaum Chowpatty after their boat tilted during immersion. On Ganesh Visrajan, idols of the elephant-headed Hindu god in different sizes and avatars were immersed in different lakes, ponds and rivers.
