Mumbai, August 29: Days after opening up the Juhu Tara road bridge in Mumbai for light motor vehicles, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will remove height barriers to make way for Ganesha idols. The bridge is one of the central routes that Ganpati mandals and organisers take for visarjan (immersion of idols). The height barrier (height of 3.5 metres) will be removed for six days, mid-day reported. Ganesh Chaturthi 2019: List of Dos and Don'ts for Ganpati Mandals by BSGSS.
The Juhu Tara road bridge, which was closed since June 3, reopened on August 9. The decision to remove the height barrier was taken in consultation with Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) experts, mid-day reported. The bridge which is crucial for vehicular traffic from Juhu to Bandra is also a major route for tall Ganesh idols taken to Juhu beach.
The decision was taken considering the request of few Ganpati mandals to remove the height barriers. According to a BMC official, "letting Ganesh idols will not be a problem as it usually weights not more than one tonne. However, trolleys and load-carrying trucks weighing over ten tonnes will still not be allowed on the bridge."
With just four days remaining for Ganesh Chaturthi 2019, the civic officials are leaving no stones unturned. The BMC is filling potholes on priority to avoid any inconvenience to the people. The Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVMC) is also repairing the roads ahead of Ganeshaotsav.
