Osaka, June 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held bilateral talks with the United States’ President Donald Trump ahead of the formal opening of the G-20 Summit in Japan's Osaka. PM Modi discussed various issues including trade, defence and 5G communications networks. The Prime Minister also thanked Trump for expressing his "love towards India" in a letter recently delivered by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Meanwhile, the US President also congratulated PM Modi on Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) landslide victory in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Trump was hopeful that both countries would work together in many areas. He stated, “It was a big victory, you deserve it, you have done a great job. We have big things to announce. In terms of trade, in terms of manufacturing, we would be discussing 5G. Earlier in the day, a tri-lateral meeting between Japan-America-India also took place. In the meeting, PM Modi highlighted "the importance India attaches to" the grouping. He also noted that India’s first ever bilateral summit with the two countries took place Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he had coined the term JAI (Japan-America-India).
PM Modi reached Osaka on Thursday morning to participate in the G20 Summit. The summit will take place between June 28 and 29. It will be PM Modi's sixth G20 Summit.
