New Delhi, September 26: The Supreme Court, in a landmark judgement on Wednesday, declared Aadhaar as constitutionally valid with some modifications. The court in its verdict said that Aadhaar would not be mandatory for banks, private companies and for documentation related to educational purposes. The apex court's bench of five-judge headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said Aadhaar is meant to help benefits reach marginalised sections of the society and takes into account the dignity of people not only from the personal but also from the community point of view. In a 4:1 verdict, the CJI and Justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar and Ashok Bhushan were in support of Aadhaar while Justice DY Chandrachud dissented.
