New Delhi, December 30: Fuel prices continued their upward trend on Monday with petrol prices hovering at Rs 75 per litre and above in the four metro cities- Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata. In Delhi, petrol was priced at Rs 75.04 per litre against Rs 74.88 per litre on Sunday. Meanwhile, diesel was priced at Rs 67.78 per litre on Monday against Rs 67.60 on Sunday. In Mumbai, petrol was being sold at Rs 80.53 per litre against Rs 80.40 per litre on Sunday while diesel was Rs 71.12 per litre against Rs 70.93 per litre.
According to daily price notification of state-owned oil firms, in Chennai, petrol was priced at Rs 77.85 per litre while diesel was Rs 71.67 per litre on Monday. In Kolkata, petrol was sold at Rs 77.54 per litre and diesel was at Rs 70.20 per litre. According to reports, the price hike comes as oil firms raised rates to make up for rising cost of production. The petrol and diesel prices are reviewed by oil marketing companies such as state-run Indian Oil Corporation on a daily basis. The rates are revised daily on the basis of changes in their benchmark international fuel prices and rupee-dollar exchange rate. Any revisions are implemented at the fuel stations with effect from 6 am each day to sync it with the variation in global oil prices.
