Bengaluru, August 21: 'Citizens Group, East Bengaluru' on Sunday began a 'NoDevelopmentNoTax' campaign to avoid paying property tax because they were fed up with the government's 'indifference' to their requests for better public facilities, including fixing potholes. The group came together last week and raised money to repair potholes along a 6 km stretch in Halanayakanahalli, Muneshwara Layout, and Choodasandra.

Arif Mudgal, a 32-year-old techie and organisation founder, borrowed Rs 2.7 lakh for the project. Mudgal told TOI that he stepped in to help after seeing two incidents on Hosa Road a few days prior. A woman who lives close to my flat was hurt when the car she was riding in overturned after hitting a pothole on Hosa Road, Mudgal added. Maharashtra PWD Minister Dada Bhuse Directs Officials to Immediately Fill Potholes on Mumbai-Nashik Highway to Avoid Traffic Snarls and Accidents.

On the evening of August 14, a delivery worker for an online retailer also suffered injuries while attempting to avoid the same pothole. He hit a car head-on and broke his leg as a result. He is the only breadwinner in his family of nine and is from Mandya, he said.

According to Mudgal, five years ago, he and other like-minded individuals created "Citizens Group, East Bengaluru." We filled in several potholes, and other group members also gave money. We ran out of money, so I had to take out a loan, added Mudgal. Politicians show little interest in these problems. They believe those who live there are from other states or countries. So, on Sunday, we began a campaign to boycott property taxes, he added.
