New Delhi, October 4: In an incident that reflects gross misuse of public services, passengers travelling in trains have made it clear that Indians don’t really deserve anything good! Indian Railways, that has taken several initiatives to improve facilities for its passengers, is having a tough time maintaining these luxurious facilities in many of its trains because of the callous behaviour of some of its passengers. Items such as windows panes, iron grills, toilet mugs, ceiling fans, linen bedsheets and pillows, nothing has escaped the eyes of the thieves.

Reports inform that things worth Rs 2.97 crore were recovered by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in 2017-18, which is double the value of stolen item recovered by the RPF in 2016-17. The other items in trains that are always on target include wash basins, mirrors, taps, solar plates, electric coach fans and switches. A railway official who has been given the task to deal with the thefts under the Railways Act stated that his staff has sometimes noticed passengers stuffing linen in their bag while deboarding the train. Sunil Udasi, CPRO Central Railway was quoted by Mumbai Mirror saying that between April to September 2018, 79,350 hand towel, 27,545 bedsheets, 21,050, pillow covers, 2,150 pillows and 2,065 blankets were stolen, which were worth Rs. 62 lakh approximately. Reports inform that in 2016-17, the RPF had arrested 5,458 people in 5,219 cases of robbery and had recovered a property worth Rs 1.58 crore. According to a report by India Times, the Indian Railways has incurred a loss of around Rs 4,000 crore over the last three fiscals, the main reason being thefts in trains. Meanwhile, a Railway spokesperson had earlier informed that the Railways conducts drives to catch the offenders because there are times when their deeds have even led to disruptions in train operations.
