New Delhi, July 25: Following Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal's announcement of free travel for women commuters in Delhi metro and Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses last month, it will soon become a reality. The Delhi Cabinet may soon approve free travel for women in DTC and cluster scheme buses. Delhi Metro, Bus Travel To Be Free of Cost For Women, Says Arvind Kejriwal.
According to a Times of India report, for each 'pink ticket' issued for a free ride, the government will reimburse Rs 10 to the operator irrespective of the distance travelled. Reportedly, a cabinet note has been prepared and it will soon be presented. Even though the government plans to intend free travel to women commuters in metros as well, but the plan will take eight more months to be implemented. So the government is eager to start it on the busses soon.
On an average commuter spends Rs 10 on a ride, The fare for travelling in a DTC or cluster bus is Rs 5 for up to 4km, Rs 10 is charged if you travelling within a distance of 4km to 10km, and Rs 15 for travel beyond 10 km.
Few months before the Assembly Elections, Kejriwal made the announcement and said the Delhi government will make metro and bus travel free of cost for women "to encourage them to use public transport".
