Amritsar, February 22: Former Punjab Superintendent of Police (SP) was sentenced to 10-year jail by a Gurdaspur court on Thursday in connection with a rape case in which he was pronounced guilty on February 15. Additional District and Sessions Judge Prem Kumar pronounced the quantum of sentence. Singh was also given five years of jail term in another case of a bribery case. A fine of Rs 50,000 was also imposed.
According to media reports, the ex-police officer said that he would challenge the order. Singh was booked in August 2016, after a state government employee accused him of taking Rs 50,000 bribe to remove his name from an FIR in an alleged rape case. He was reportedly developed illicit relations with his wife on the pretext of visiting his house in connection with the probe. A case was registered under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 13 (2) (criminal misconduct) of the Prevention of Corruption Act against the ex-police officer on August 3, 2016. The complainant in the rape case is a resident of Geeta Bhawan road.
After the Punjab and Haryana high court rejected Singh’s in September 2016, he remained underground for months and was suspended from the service. He surrendered in a Gurdaspur court on April 20, 2017. In November, 2017, the state government ordered his premature retirement. The officer was in headlines after he, was kidnapped along with his cook and a friend by Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists on December 31, 2015. Two days later, the terrorists had attacked the Pathankot Air Force station. The National Investigation Agency initially suspected him to be involved in providing logistical support to the terrorists, but later, he was given a clean chit.
