New Delhi, May 24: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain the plea of former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, seeking protection from arrest by the Central Investigation Bureau (CBI) in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam case. The top court rejected Kumar’s pleas till concerned jurisdictional court in West Bengal decides his anticipatory bail plea. Rajeev Kumar, Former Kolkata Police Chief Reports to MHA After EC Relieved From Duty as Additional Director General of CID.

The apex court said, “You (Rajeev Kumar) can go to Calcutta High Court or trial courts as they are functional. There is no vacation there (in courts of West Bengal). Seek appropriate remedy." Kumar was earlier granted protection from arrest by the apex court for seven days which ends today.

A vacation bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said Kumar can approach the Calcutta High Court or the trial court there for seeking relief. At the outset, the bench told Kumar's counsel that a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had already passed an order in the matter and later the CJI had also declined the urgent listing of an application filed by the IPS officer seeking an extension of protection from arrest. Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar Appears Before CBI in Saradha Chit Fund Scam.

Earlier this May, reported at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) as per the orders of the Election Commission (EC). Kumar was relieved from duty as Additional Director General, CID, in West Bengal by the poll panel. The decision to relieve Kumar was taken because of the increasing incidents of violence in the state during the Lok Sabha elections. Earlier in February, Kumar was involved in a face-off with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the agency's investigation in Saradha and Rose Valley chit fund scams.
