Fodder Scam: Lalu Prasad Yadav Surrenders in Ranchi Court, Mumbai Doctors to Conduct Check-Up and Inform Court

New Delhi, August 30: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief and Former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav on Thursday surrendered before a CBI court in Ranchi in connection with the Fodder Scam. The 70-year old RJD Chief has been out on bail since May. Prabhat Kumar, Yadav's Lawyer informed that that doctors of Asian Heart Institute (Mumbai) will do Lalu's checkup and then inform the Court about his health condition.

Earlier this week, the Jharkhand High Court had turned down his application seeking three months extension to the provisional bail granted earlier to him on medical grounds. The Court had directed him to surrender before it expires on August 30.  Lalu has been held guilty in the fodder scam and was imprisoned following a court order. Owing to his poor health, he was allowed to take treatment at the Asian Heart Institute in Mumbai.

On August 17, the Jharkhand high court had extended Lalu's provisional bail till August 27, but on August 24 refused to extend it further. On September 30, 2013, he was convicted in the first fodder scam case related to the Chaibasa Treasury. On January 24, 2018, the former Bihar chief minister was again convicted in another case related to the Chaibasa Treasury. On February 23 and March 19, he was convicted in cases related to the Deoghar Treasury and the Dumka Treasury respectively.

After being sent to jail in December 2017 following conviction in fodder scam cases, the RJD Chief spent a considerable time at the RIMS hospital in Ranchi and at the AIIMS in New Delhi for treatment of various ailments. He was also treated at a Mumbai hospital for three weeks and was discharged on August 25.
