Pune, August 7: As flood situation in Maharashtra and Karnataka continues to be grim due to incessant rains and release of water from major reservoirs over the last few days, the Indian Army is assisting state authorities in carrying out rescue operations. Around 1000 army personnel have deployed in flood-hit areas of the two states. Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa Conducts Aerial Survey of Flood Affected Areas.
Defence Public Relation Officer told ANI, “As on August 7, a total of 16 Columns and 12 Engineer Task Forces comprising of almost 1000 Army personnel have been employed in Belgaum, Bagalkot and Raichur districts of Karnataka and Raigad, Kohlapur and Sangli districts of Maharashtra to carry out flood relief operations.” BS Yediyurappa to Devendra Fadnavis: Regulate Koyna Reservoir's Water to Avoid Floods in Karnataka.
Continuous discharge from dams in Pune — Khadakswasla, Mulshi and Pavana has caused flooding in several low-lying areas. District Traffic police have also shut bridges between Pune and the Pimpri- Chinchwad. According to reports, the administration has relocated 13,336 citizens from Pune and Pimpri- Chinchwad. Divisional commissioner Deepak Mhaisekar told Hindustan Times that that 50,000 people had been evacuated from Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Pune, following the floods.
Meanwhile, on Monday, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas in north Karnataka to take stock of the situation. Due to incessant rains, road connectivity was disrupted in Shivamogga district of the state. The district also faced problems of power cuts in several areas.
