Coastal Karnataka has also faced devastating impact of the incessent downpour, with 12 deaths being reported in incidents of river overflow and collapse of residences. The BS Yeddyurappa-led BJP government has tasked all agencies to expedite the relief and rescue operation.

Among those facing the worst brunt of rainfall includes Maharashtra, where nine deaths were recorded yesterday after a rescue boat overturned in deluged Sangli region. In Kolhapur and Satara, the continuing rainfall combined with overflowing of rivers has led to water-logging in villages upto a height of 10-12 feet.

12 teams of the Indian Navy were rushed to Kolhapur last night to rescue people from low-lying regions. In Satara and Sangli, the additional NDRF personnel have been deployed since early this week to expedite the rescue operation.

Several south-bound trains passing through Maharashtra have been cancelled due to the damage of railway line. The incessent rainfall and constant rolling down of boulders has prevented the authorities to complete restoration of the route. Services of 370 long-distance trains and 44 short-distance trains have been terminated.
