Flood Situation in Bihar and Assam Remains Grim With 209 Deaths, Over 1.06 Crore People Affected in Both States
Officials informed that over 1.06 crore people were affected by the deluge in Assam and Bihar. In the wake of the heavy rainfall, around 1.25 lakh people have been evacuated from the flood-affected areas in the state so far in Bihar.
Patna, July 29: The flood situation in Bihar and Assam continued to be grim as the death toll jumped to 209 till Sunday. In several areas, the flood-water remained unchanged, which crippled normal life even more. Reports inform that while the water level in major rivers in the two states began receding, at some places they are still flowing above the danger-mark in both the states. Officials informed that over 1.06 crore people were affected by the deluge in the two states. In the wake of the heavy rainfall, around 1.25 lakh people have been evacuated from the flood-affected areas in the state so far in Bihar. In Bihar:
In Bihar, the deluge has affected over 85 lakh people even though the toll remained at 127 for the second consecutive day on Sunday. A total of 13 north Bihar districts have been hit by the flood. Amid the torrential rains, the worst-hit districts in terms of deaths, however, are Sitamarhi and Madhubani which has accounted for 37 and 30 casualties respectively. Bihar was hit by flash floods earlier this month owing to torrential rainfall in Terai region of Nepal. According to state disaster management department, 13.85 lakh people, in 200 panchayats of 16 blocks in the district are affected by the floods.
Reports inform that nearly 876 personnel with 133 motor boats have been deployed for relief and rehabilitation work. In the wake of the situation, the state government had announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased while each family surviving the calamity is getting an assistance of Rs 6,000 through direct cash transfer.
In Assam:
In Assam, the death toll reached to 82 on Monday with the death of one more person in Barpeta district. In the northeastern state, a population of 21.68 lakh of 1,716 villages in 56 revenue circles of Assam is affected by the calamity. The flood situation in the state worsened after Bhutan released excess water from Kuricchu Hydropower Plant flooded seven western Assam districts on Thursday even as the death toll from the floods rose to 76 in the state.
According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), there are 833 relief camps operational in the districts of Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat and Jorhat districts housing 1,95,159 inmates.
