Kolkata, December 27: Metro services in Kolkata were disrupted on Thursday evening after smoke was detected in a metro train from Maidan and Rabindra Sadan station. The incident took place at around 5:15 pm. According to reports, the fire broke out when the train was passing through the underground tunnel. Some passengers were even fainted due to smoke. Authorities managed to control the fire. Meanwhile, rescue operations are still underway, and around 16 passengers were taken to a hospital, reported Times Now. Kolkata Police Disaster Management group has asked the passengers not to panic.

Speaking to media, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata, Aparajita Rai confirmed that there were no casualties in the fire. She said, "There are no casualties, 16 people have been injured, all have been taken to SSKM Medical College. It was an accident, there was a small spark in the front portion of the metro."

In a similar incident in April, panic engulfed commuters of Kolkata Metro when power-tripped on a Kavi Subhas-bound train. It was Poila Baishakh or Bengali New Year, and trains were packed as people were returning home. The train suddenly stopped while entering the station. Passengers smashed window panes as they attempted to run out of the dark tunnel. The Passengers desperately tried to move out of the claustrophobic compartments, by walking in the vestibule.
