New Delhi, January 25: A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against the alleged mastermind of Shaheen Bagh protest and former Jawaharlal Nehru University student Sharjeel Imam for his anti-national statement. In his controversial speech, Imam said, "Assam should be cut off from the rest of India." "If we have 5 lakh organised people then we can permanently cut north-east from India or at least for one month. Put so much (unclear) on the road that they cannot even remove it for a month. It is our responsibility to isolate Assam from India, then only they will listen to us," Imam can be heard saying in a video. He added, "Do you know what is happening to Assamese Muslims? NRC is already applied there, they have been put in detention centres. We may come to know that in 6-8 months all Bengalis have been killed - Hindu or Muslim. If we want to help Assam, then we will have to stop the way to Assam for the Indian Army and other supplies."
GP Singh, ADGP Law and Order, Assam Police said that an FIR has been lodged against Sharjeel Iman under sections 13 (1)/18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and sections 153 A, 153 B and 124 A of Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station.
Assam’s Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also reacted to Imam's statement. "The main organizer of Shaheen Bagh protest (in Delhi), Sarjil has said that Assam should be cut off from the rest of India. The state government has taken cognizance of this seditious statement and has decided to register a case against him," he said.
