Gopaldas Neeraj, Famous Poet And Lyricist Passes Away at AIIMS in New Delhi

Famous poet and lyricist Gopaldas Neeraj died in Delhi today after a prolonged illness. He was moved from Agra to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after he condition deteriorated.

New Delhi, July 19: Famous poet and lyricist Gopaldas Neeraj died in Delhi today after a prolonged illness at 93 years of age. He was moved from Agra to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after his condition deteriorated. A team of four doctors were looking after his health. According to his medical reports, the doctors could not control his blood pressure, and liquid also built up in his liver, which was removed after he was admitted to the AIIMS.

On Wednesday he was admitted to the pulmonary department of the AIIMS. Since morning his condition was not stable. Neeraj was also facing a breathing problem. Because of pulmonary oedema, the doctors were also worried about a potential damage to his brain. However, doctors removed the liquid from his liver. He died in the evening.

Neeraj was awarded Padma Shri in 1991 and Padma Bhushan in 2007. He was a Professor of Hindi Literature in Dharma Samaj College. Neeraj also wrote some popular songs for Hindi movies. The Padma Bhushan awardee had served as the chancellor of Mangalayatan University, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh.
