Dhule, July 1: The spate of killings on child-lifting rumours continues as fresh lynching incident was reported in Maharashtra's Dhule district on Sunday. Five youths were beaten to death by a frenzied mob in the tribal hamlet of Rainpada after they suspected them to be child-abductors.
The incident occurred at 11am today, reports said. The deceased got down from a state transport corporation bus and asked a query to a girl child. On spotting the outsiders speaking to the minor, locals got suspicious. Within minutes, a mob of nearly 250 men armed with sticks and rods surrounded them and began the assault.
The victims were thrashed in the market place and subsequently taken to a room where they were fatally assaulted. Here is the video of the lynching going viral on social media:
After the local police arrived, the mob dispersed. 15 among them, however, were apprehended and sent to custody. The victims were rushed to the local Pimpalner hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.
"This is a shameful incident. People of Maharashtra do not approve of this culture of violence. Strict action will be taken against all those involved," said Shaina NC, spokesperson of the ruling BJP.
The recent lynchings, reports claim, are being fuelled by WhatsApp rumours of child-abduction rackets functioning in several parts of the nation. The messages claim that the child-lifters are being dispatched in rural and tribal parts of the nation to kidnap the children and sell-off their kidneys.
