Patna, June 19: Bihar continues to reel under the outbreak of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), with the death toll mounting to 112 on Wednesday. According to a tweet by ANI,  out of the total 112 deaths in Muzaffarpur, 93 died at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) while 19 have lost their lives at the Kejriwal Hospital. On Tuesday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited the SKMCH in Muzaffarpur and gave directions to convert SKMCH into a 2500-bed hospital. Kumar also issued orders saying 1500 new beds for the hospital should be arranged immediately. Meanwhile,  Bihar Chief Secretary Deepak Kumar said  12 extra doctors have been deputed at Sri Krishna Medical College & Hospital (SKMCH) from different districts in Muzaffarpur. Amid the AES outbreak in Bihar, Odisha Health Minister Naba Kishore Das has directed officials to ascertain toxic content in litchi fruit being sold in the state. The directive has come in the wake of reports that encephalitis is spreading in litchi growing areas of Bihar, including Muzaffarpur district and other parts of the country and that consumption of the fruit was among the factors for the spread of the disease.
