Emergency 1975: PM Narendra Modi, Amit Shah Remember Leaders Who Fought Against Indira Gandhi's Declaration, Opposition Takes Dig at Modi Govt

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah hailed all the opposition leaders of 1970s who resisted the emergency. Meanwhile, the opposition likened the emergency period with five years of the Modi government.

New Delhi, June 25: On the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed all the opposition leaders of the 1970s who resisted the emergency. He also shared a video of police brutality during the period on his Twitter handle. He tweeted, “India salutes all those greats who fiercely and fearlessly resisted the Emergency. India’s democratic ethos successfully prevailed over an authoritarian mindset.”

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while criticising the emergency, took a jibe at the Modi Government. Banerjee likened the period of the emergency with five years of Narendra Modi government.  She tweeted, “Today is the anniversary of the #Emergency declared in 1975. For the last five years, the country went through a ‘Super Emergency’. We must learn our lessons from history and fight to safeguard the democratic institutions in the country.” Excesses of Emergency Should be Part of Curriculum: Vice President Venkaiah Naidu.

Mamata Banerjee's Tweet:

Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury also took a jibe at the Modi government while tweeting about the Emergency. Yechury wrote: “Today, a stronger resolve than in 1975 is required, to fight back attacks on Secular Democracy. This attack is by those who don't think India belongs to all its citizens. But it does, to all Indians irrespective of which god they pray to (or don't). #Emergency #SecularDemocracy".

Veteran BJP leader and former minister Kalraj Mishra, who was among the political leaders who were jailed during the Emergency, posted an image of the jail. He tweeted, “This period will be remembered as curtailing of fundamental rights. The memories of those 19 months during #emergency are still fresh in my thoughts. This is the jail where I have been kept along with other leaders during #Emergency for raising our voices against dictatorship."

BJP Leader Kalraj Mishra's Tweet:

The emergency, which lasted for 21 months from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, was officially announced by the then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352(1) of the constitution. According to Amnesty International, around 1,40,000 people had been arrested during the period.
