New Delhi, June 25: On the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed all the opposition leaders of the 1970s who resisted the emergency. Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while criticising the emergency, took a jibe at the Modi Government. Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury also took a jibe at the Modi government while tweeting about the Emergency. Yechury wrote:┬атАЬToday, a stronger resolve than in 1975 is required, to fight back attacks on Secular Democracy. This attack is by those who don't think India belongs to all its citizens. Veteran BJP leader and former minister Kalraj Mishra, who was among the political leaders who were jailed during the Emergency, posted an image of the jail. He tweeted, тАЬThis period will be remembered as curtailing of fundamental rights. The memories of those 19 months during #emergency are still fresh in my thoughts. This is the jail where I have been kept along with other leaders during #Emergency for raising our voices against dictatorship."

The emergency, which lasted for 21 months from┬аJune 25, 1975,┬аto March 21, 1977, was officially announced by the then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352(1) of the constitution.┬аAccording to Amnesty International, around 1,40,000 people had been arrested during the period.
