New Delhi, September 23: Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Monday said that all the buses in India would switch to electric in the span of next two years. The Minister opined that for this, the government might not have to impose transition to cleaner sources of mobility.

Addressing a national conclave on energy efficiency in micro, small and medium enterprises in the national capital on Monday, Gadkari said, as quoted by Economic Times, "In the coming two years, all buses will be converted to electric." This is not the first time Gadkari had advocated for the adoption of alternative sources of energy. He had stated that the transition to electric mobility would come in its natural course of progression in the coming times. On government's role, he said, "There is no need to make electric(vehicles) mandatory, or even ban petrol and diesel vehicles."

Apart for this, the Union Minister has put on hold Niti Aayog's proposals to deliberately impose strict deadlines for phasing out of petrol and diesel-run two and three-wheelers. It is to be known that Niti Aayog had on June 2019, set deadline to phase out petrol and diesel-run two-wheelers and three-wheelers by 2023 and 2025.
