New Delhi, November 20: A holiday has been declared in several states on the occasion of Eid-e-Milad, also known as Eid-e-Milad-Un-Nabi or Mawlid, which will be observed on Wednesday, November 21. A section of the Muslim community celebrates Eid-e-Milad on 12th of Rabi-ul-Awwal month to commemorate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad. Except in Andaman and Nicobar, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Punjab, Sikkim and West Bengal, a holiday is declared in all states of the country for Eid-e-Milad. Due to the festival, banks, government offices, schools and colleges will be closed in the states where the Eid-e-Milad holiday is declared. The tradition to celebrate the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad is widely followed in India. Eid-e-Milad or Mawlid is mainly celebrated by Muslims from the Sufi or the Barelvi school of thought. Although many different sections of the Muslim community believe the birthday celebration has no place in Islamic culture.

Followers of Salafi and Wahhabi school of thoughts believe that the observance of Mawlid is an act of biddat (innovation), and strictly remained uncalled for during the era of Prophet Muhammad and his appointed successors.
