Jammu, August 22: Eid celebrations in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir were marred by violence on Wednesday. Heavy clashes took place between security forces and protesters in Anantnag, prompting officials to resort to teargas shelling. The violence reportedly erupted after the stone pelters started attacking security forces. No casualties have been reported so far.

In Srinagar, people were seen waving national flag of Pakistan and flag of ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) on Wednesday morning. Ahead of Eid celebrations, top police and CRPF officials visited the south Kashmir district of Anantnag on Monday and reviewed security situation there.

In view of Eid celebrations, the officials in Anantnag were directed that market checking in the areas be intensified and those found indulging in malpractices be appropriately booked so that the common masses do not suffer.

On Tuesday, markets in Kashmir valley, particularly in the summer capital, wore a festive look. People went on a shopping spree, including for sacrificial animals, to prepare for Eid-ul-Azha. Sheep and goats worth crores will be sacrificed to mark the tradition of Prophet Ibrahim, in which he had offered to sacrifice his only son, Prophet Ismail, as an act of obedience for Allah.
