Earthquake of Magnitude 4.6 on Richter Scale Hits Nicobar Islands; No Casualties Reported

An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale hit Nicobar islands region on Wednesday. Tremors were felt in the region at 2:49 pm. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the epicentre of the earthquake was located latitude 8.9 north and longitude 93.4 east.

Port Blair, August 21: An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale hit Nicobar islands region on Wednesday. Tremors were felt in the region at 2:49 pm. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the epicentre of the earthquake was located latitude 8.9 north and longitude 93.4 east at a depth of 10 km. The entire region is prone to frequent earthquakes. Usually islands witness more than two-three quakes a day. In 2009, the region witnessed a massive quake of 7.5 magnitude. It was the strongest in the region since the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. The epicentre of the massive quake was 260 km north of Port Blair, and tremors were felt in south-east India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Thailand.

Earlier on May 26 this year, a quake of magnitude 4.5 on the Richter scale struck Andaman & Nicobar Islands. No loss of life or damage to property was reported. Tremors of magnitude 5.4 were also reported off the Andaman coast on May 22. The low-intensity impact was reported from parts of Andaman & Nicobar neighbouring Myanmar.
