Palghar, February 20: A series of low-intensity earthquake shook again shook some parts of Palghar district in Maharashtra on Wednesday. Residents of Palghar experienced mild tremors thrice in a day. However, there were no reports of any casualty or damage to property. Palghar district has witnessed over 40 earthquakes since November last year. A couple of NDRF teams have camped in the district.
On Wednesday, three successive earthquakes of magnitude 2.9, 2.9, and 3.1 hit Palghar at 10:14 am, 1:24 pm and 1:28 pm respectively. A week earlier, tremors of magnitude 3.1 shook some parts of Palghar. The tremors were felt around 10:44 am in an area of 10 km near Dhundalwadi village which has a population of nearly 3,000 people. On February 1, mild tremors were experienced in Dahanu and Talasari talukas of the district. A two-year-old girl had at that time died after falling and suffering a head injury at a village as panicked locals rushed out of their homes, according to police. Palghar was also jolted by mild tremors on February 7.
The region has been experiencing such tremors routinely since November last year. The district administration is conducting awareness programmes in some villages of Dahanu taluka from February 12 to 21 to tell people about the precautionary measures to be taken during such emergency.
A tribal-dominated district and an industrial centre, Palghar, is situated around 110 km north of state capital Mumbai with thousands commuting by local trains to Thane and Mumbai daily to earn a living.
