Jammu, February 18: An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 on the Richter Scale hit Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. According to a tweet by ANI, the quake hit the region at around 4:25 am on today and mild tremors were felt at several areas across the state. The quake is believed to be of 10 km depth, the India Metrological Department (IMD)reported. No casualties or damage to property has been reported so far. Earlier this month, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Jammu and Kashmir and lasted several seconds as people ran out of their homes. The epicentre of the quake was at a depth of 40 kilometres in northwestern Kashmir, 118 kilometres from Srinagar, the officials were quoted by PTI.

Earlier this month on February 12, a quake measuring 5.1 hit the Bay of Bengal and tremors were felt in Chennai, the US Geological Survey informed. Reports inform that light tremors were also felt in Chennai where people took to social media to report the quake. However, no casualty or damage to property was reported. According to USGS, the epicentre was 10 km below sea level and the quake struck about 609 km away from Chennai.
Multiple earthquakes have struck the Jammu and Kashmir region in the last few months. In January, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake hit Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region. Reports inform that the epicentre of the quake was 63.6 km north of Leh and 193.1 km east of Kargil – in Ladakh region.
