Mysuru, October 19: Dasara celebrations have been called off at the Mysore Palace as Putta Chinnamani, member of the erstwhile Royal Family, died on Friday. The 98-year-old, who was reeling under ill-health, breathed her last at the Shantavare Gopalagoda Hospital in Mysuru.

In the wake of her demise, the authorities announced earlier in the day that the celebrations at the Mysore Palace have been cancelled. However, other events linked to the festival, which are organised by the state government, were held as per the schedule. PM Modi Burns Ravan Effigy During Dussehra Celebrations at Lal-Qila Maidan.

Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy condoled the death of Chinnamani, praying for her soul to rest in peace. "I am deeply saddened to hear about the death of Smt. Putta Chinnammani, mother of Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, Maharani of Mysuru Royal Family," he said.

The Dasara celebrations in Mysuru, particularly the extravaganza at the Mysore Palace, draws visitors from all parts of India to the Karnataka city.

Meanwhile, Dussehra (as called in northern parts of India) was celebrated with much fanfare in other parts of the nation as well. In Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram nath Kovind joined the Dussehra celebrations at the Lal Qila maidan. PM Modi also burnt the effigy of Ravan -- a customary practice which symbolises the victory of good over the evil.
