Dussehra 2018: Teachers Burn Effigy With Photographs of Punjab CM and State Ministers in Ludhiana as Part of Protest Over Salary Issues
The teachers in Ludhiana burnt the effigy in protest against the decision of the cabinet to fix their salary at Rs 15,000 during the probation period and demanding permanent status.
Ludhiana, October 18: While the rest of the nation burnt an effigy of Ravan on the auspicious occasion of Dussehra, scores of teachers in Punjab burnt an effigy with photographs of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and state cabinet ministers pasted on it. The teachers burnt the effigy in Ludhiana in protest against the decision of the cabinet to fix their salary at Rs 15,000 during the probation period and demanding permanent status.
This is not the first time that the teachers burnt an effigy to mark their protest. Earlier in September, the SSA (Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan) and RMSA (Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan) teachers burnt the effigy of the state government at Ferozepur Road after a cabinet meeting was held on the issue of teachers’ salaries. According to a report by TOI, nearly 550 teachers from the city recruited under SSA and RMSA are shocked at the government’s direction to induct them as permanent employees, but on just a basic pay of Rs10,300 a month for three years. The report further informs that teachers, based on cadre and experience, are currently drawing between Rs30,000 and Rs50,000 a month while most of these teachers under SSA and RMSA are earning Rs 42,800 a month.
