Drunken Driving in Kolkata: 264 Cases Registered on December 24 & 25, Tight Vigil Before New Year 2020
Police informed that over 3,600 motorists and two-wheel riders have been prosecuted this Christmas. With 201 cases being registered for triple riding, 690 were caught for disorderly conduct and 589 for riding without a helmet.
Kolkata, December 27: A shocking 264 cases of drunk driving were registered on the eve of Christmas and on December 25. In addition to this, twenty bikes were also seized as people violated rules on the festive occasion. According to a Times of India report, 106 people were booked on December 24 and the numbers shot up to 158 on the day of Christmas.
An IPS officer quoted in the report states that looking at the sharp rise in drunk driving cases during Christmas, they fear that situation will be equally challenging for them over the weekend and on New Year. Police are further writing to Court and RTO requesting a temporary suspension of licences of the accused.
Checks will be carried out not only near the pubs but also in other parts. Restaurants and pubs have been asked to take an initiative and not to encourage drunk driving.
