New Delhi, January 2: DP Tripathi, senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Member of Parliament (MP), died in New Delhi on Thursday. He was 67. He died due to prolonged illness. Born on January 6, 1954, in Uttar Pradesh, Devi Prasad Tripathi was the general secretary of the NCP. He was one of the most prominent leaders of Sharad Pawar's party.
Having become involved in politics at the age of sixteen, Tripath was one of the former aides of Ex-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He left the Indian National Congress over his opposition to Sonia Gandhi becoming Prime Minister because of her foreign origin.

In 1999, he joined Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party and went on to become General Secretary and chief spokesman of the party.
