Dowry Death in Uttar Pradesh: Court Sentences Man, His Father to Life Imprisonment After Newly-Married Woman Strangulated to Death in Bulandshahr Three Years Ago

Meerut, October 21: A court in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut recently sentenced a man and his father to life imprisonment in connection with a dowry death case. The decision comes nearly three years after a newly-married woman was reportedly found dead under mysterious circumstances. The court of the Additional Judicial Magistrate, while passing the order, sentenced the deceased woman's husband and her father-in-law to life imprisonment.

According to a report in the Times of India, the incident occurred in September 2020 when the 28-year-old newlywed woman was dead under mysterious circumstances. The incident came to light after the deceased woman's family filed a complaint against her in-laws under sections 498A and 304b (dowry death). Sharma said the complaint was filed against the woman's husband and three family members from her in-laws. Following the case, the police filed a chargesheet in December 2021.

In its chargesheet, police officials said the woman died due to strangulation. When the court's trial began, all the witnesses turned hostile. Post this, the court took suo motu cognisance in the case and cited the Supreme Court’s judgment in a 2015 case (Purshottam Dashrath Barate and Others Vs. The court then awarded life imprisonment to the woman's husband, identified as Omprakash, and her father-in-law, Pappu, under Section 302 (punishment for murder).
