The husband was apprehended by the police on dowry-related accusations subsequent to the alleged suicide of his 19-year-old wife. The suspect, Ramesh Gogoi, was taken into custody on Saturday, a day after the death of his wife, Tolari Koch Gogoi.
According to a report published by Hindustan Times, the police have registered a case under Section 304-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which pertains to dowry death, among other sections. The couple had been married for a few years, with Tolari hailing from the Khubalia area of Dhemaji. Accused Had Married Victim When She Was 15
Previous complaints lodged by Tolari's family against Ramesh have come to light, alleging that he had eloped with and forcibly married Tolari when she was just 15 years old. The ongoing investigation is also probing the possibility of child marriage practices by Ramesh. An officer involved in the case stated, "Currently, the charges against Ramesh include promoting dowry and abetting suicide. The investigation continues, and we may add sections related to child marriage if necessary."
Woman Dies by Suicide Due to Dowry Harassment
Tolari's mother has accused Ramesh of subjecting her daughter to physical and mental torture while demanding money, leading to Tolari's depression and fear, ultimately driving her to end her life. The police discovered Tolari's body at Ramesh's residence on Friday. Ramesh initially fled the scene but was subsequently captured by the police on Saturday afternoon. As part of the investigation, Tolari's body has been sent for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
