Kolkata, June 17: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday held a meeting with representatives of protesting doctors at Nabanna. According to reports, Banerjee has accepted the proposal of doctors to set up Grievance Redressal Cell in Government Hospitals. She also directed Kolkata Police commissioner Anuj Sharma to deploy a nodal police officer in every hospital. The meeting was held at an auditorium adjacent to the state secretariat in Howrah. Doctors' Strike: AIIMS, Other Hospitals Join IMA-Called Stir; Health Services Hit in Delhi.

The meeting was held as doctors' strike enters the seventh day in the state. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) government had earlier promised for the live telecast of the meeting, but later it backtracked. Meanwhile, on June 15, the state chief minister had also promised not to invoke the stringent Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) and appealed to them to resume work immediately. She had said that the West Bengal government would bear all medical expenses for the treatment of the two junior doctors, who were assaulted at the NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata that triggered the strike. The incident took place on June 10.

Several doctors across the country have been protesting against the violence. The Indian Medical Association (IMA)-called protest intensified on Monday as junior doctors of the All India Institute of Medical Studies (AIIMS) in Delhi also joined the strike
