Doctors Strike Against NMC Bill: Resume Duties Immediately, AIIMS Tells Agitating Medicos
The government on Saturday directed all the members of the Resident Doctors Association and Students’ Union to resume their duties with immediate effect. Registrar of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi said that strict action would be taken against those who fail to resume their duties.
New Delhi, August 3: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Saturday directed all the members of the Resident Doctors Association and Students’ Union, who are protesting against the the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill, 2019, to resume their duties with immediate effect. Registrar of AIIMS, Delhi said that strict action like suspension/termination of services, vacation of hostel accommodation, etc would be taken against those who fail to resume their duties. Earlier, the doctors who were protesting against the bill were asked to reply immediately as to why disciplinary action should not be taken against them for violations. Meanwhile, doctors’ strike in Delhi entered the third day.
However, emergency services have resumed at several government hospitals in the national capital giving some relief to the patients. Heavy police presence was also seen around the AIIMS campus in Delhi and Safdarjung Hospital. The doctors have been boycotting work and demonstrating over certain provisions of the Bill since Thursday. The NMC bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Monday. The bill was passed 260-48 by a voice vote. The opposition parties including Congress, DMK and the Trinamool Congress staged a walkout. The Narendra Modi government rejected amendments proposed by the opposition.
The bill proposes to repeal the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956, and set up an NMC replacing the Medical Council of India (MCI). The MCI was dissolved in 2010 following corruption charges against its president Ketan Desai.
