Doctors' Strike: Harsh Vardhan Writes to Mamata Banerjee, Seeks 'Personal Intervention to Resolve Current Impasse'

With IMA announced to hold a three-day protest following doctors' strike call on June 17, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan wrote to Banerjee, asking her to 'personally intervene to resolve the current impasse.'

New Delhi/Kolkata: With the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Friday announced to hold a three-day protest culminating with a nationwide strike on June 17 to express solidarity with their protesting colleagues in West Bengal, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan wrote to Banerjee, asking her to 'personally intervene to resolve the current impasse.'

In the letter, Vardhan wrote, "It is a matter of concern that the agitation by doctors in West Bengal is not heading towards resolution, but seems to be aggravated." Suggesting to end the impasse, the Union Minister said, "Better communication with doctors and a compassionate approach to take care of the genuine problems being faced by them in a day to day to functioning would definitely be helpful in tiding over the crisis which has been created." Doctors' Strike: IMA Calls For 3-Day Stir, Nationwide Strike on June 17 to Protest Against Attacks on Medicos

Further, he added, "I take this opportunity to urge upon you to personally intervene in resolving the current impasse and taking steps to provide a secure working environment to doctors in the State of West Bengal." Vardhan even emphasised that the entire Government of India is with the state of West Bengal and willing to provide any assistance.

Earlier, IMA announced that it will hold a nationwide strike of medical professionals and doctors to protest on the issue. Due to the doctors' strike, healthcare services across the country will be affected as the IMA is one of the largest association of doctors.
