Bengaluru, March 24: The death toll in the deadly building collapse at Dharwad in Karnataka mounted to 16 on Sunday as rescue teams recovered more bodies from the debris. Till now over 60 people have been rescued. On Friday, the investigation team, arrested the architect of the building Vivek Pawar from a lodge in Kolhapur. Meanwhile, the owners of the collapsed building Ravi Basavaraj Sabarad, Basavaraj D Nigadi, Gangappa S Shintri and Mahabaleshwar Puradagudi have also surrendered to the Dharwad Suburban Police, reported The News Minute.

The five accused have been booked under section 304, 337 and 338 of the Indian Penal Code. However, they have applied for the anticipatory bail. Yesterday, a National Disaster and Rescue Force (NDRF) rescued a man who was trapped inside the debris for 62 hours. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

The tragic incident took place in Kumareshwar Nagar area after the under-construction building collapsed on March 19. Most of the trapped were labourers who were engaged in laying tiles. The Karnataka government announced an ex-gratia of Rs two lakh to families of deceased, while, the injured were given a compensation of Rs 50,000. State Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy visited the accident site on Thursday.
