New Delhi, November 5: Life came to a standstill in Gurugram after commuters faced long traffic jam in the city on the occasion of Dhanteras. According to reports, the traffic jam stretched for over 6 kilometres, starting from Mahilpalpur in Delhi to Udyog Vihar. Traffic jams were also witnessed in the national capital near major intersections, especially near markets like Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh, Lajpat Nagar and South Extension. Around 4,000 police were deployed by Delhi Traffic Police to regulate the traffic in the national capital. Delhi markets were today overcrowded as people stepped out in large numbers on Dhanteras. The other reason for the traffic jams in Delhi is the erection of stalls during the festive season of Diwali. The five-day festival of Diwali has begun today. It is the biggest festival in India. Apart from Hindus. Sikhs and Jains also celebrate it with full enthusiasm and zeal. This year, Dhanteras falls on November 5 followed by Chhoti Diwali on November 6, Diwali on November 7, Govardhan Puja on November 8 and finally Bhai Dooj on November 9. People consider it good luck to purchase gold, home appliances, utensils and vehicles on Dhanteras.
