Devendra Fadnavis Writes to EC, Seeks relaxation in Model Code of Conduct For Relief Work in Drought-Hit Areas of Maharashtra

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday wrote to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) for relaxation in Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in the state for drought relief works.

Mumbai, April 30: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday wrote to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) seeking relaxation in Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in the state for drought relief measures. He demanded relaxation in the MCC for providing relief materials to drought-hit areas of the state. Fadnavis wrote, “Total 151 talukas of Maharashtra have been declared drought-hit and Centre has passed a budget of Rs 4714 crore for drought relief in the state.” Maharashtra Lok Sabha Elections 2019 Dates: Constituency-Wise Complete Schedule Of Voting And Results For General Elections.

In the letter, he also cited an incident of 2009 when relaxation in the MCC was granted by the Election Commission. The Maharashtra CM added, that there were earlier examples when MCC relaxation was given in 2009. The CM requested to allow a cabinet meet and Ministers' visits to drought-affected areas for taking stock of the situation and necessary works which are to be undertaken as drought relief measures. Lok Sabha Elections 2019 Schedule: Voting In 7 Phases From April 11 to May 19, Counting And Results On May 23.

Devendra Fadnavis's letter:

Fadnavis added, “Reviews and implementation of ongoing programs in the field may be permitted. However, the reviews may be limited to those who are not on election duty.” Last year, the state government declared droughts in 180 tehsils which were facing water scarcity due to deficient rainfall in the monsoon season. According to reports, the maximum drought-affected areas were the talukas located in Jalgaon district, Beed, Ahmednagar and Solapur.

The Lok Sabha election in Maharashtra concluded on April 29. The parliamentary polls were held in the state in four phases. The results will be declared on May 23. The MCC immediately came into force with the announcement of poll dates on March 10.
