New Delhi, December 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a rally in Delhi's Ramlila Maidan, on Sunday said that there are no detention centres in the country. However, countering his claims many people, including journalists, have posted pictures of detention centres in Assam. Reportedly, a detention centre for illegal immigrants is also all set to open in Bengaluru from January 1. "No Muslim is being sent to detention centres, nor are there any detention centres in India. I am shocked at the lengths some people can go to spread lies. The rumour of detention centres being spread by the Congress and urban Naxals is totally false," PM Modi said at a public meet. Reacting to the development, Ahmer Khan, a journalist, said that a detention centre is under construction in Assam's Goalpara district. He also shared a picture of the same. Lawyer Prashant Bhushan also posted a picture of a detention centre, which he had visited a month ago. BBC Journalist Soutik Das also shared an image.

According to a report in Telegraph India, six detention camps are built in Kokrajhar, Silchar, Goalpara, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Tezpur to accommodate declared foreigners by the foreigners' tribunals. The Maharashtra government, under then CM Devendra Fadnavis, had also identified land from the state's first detention camp, the report added.
The Quint in September had also reported that government is in a process to built country's largest detention centre in Matia in Goalpara district of Assam. The camp reportedly can house around 3,000 detainees.
