Chennai, January 21: One of the most renowned colleges of Tamil Nadu, Loyola College in Chennai came under the attack of right-wing groups after it held an art exhibition that had 'derogatory’ paintings of Hindu gods and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On Monday, a youth team of Bharatiya Janata Party has lodged a police complaint with Chennai Director general of police (DGP) against the college for holding such an event. The event, Veethi Virudhu Vizha, was held on Saturday and Sunday to bring in focus traditional art forms. The event also included works on sexual violence, caste and other atrocities. One of the images which stirred controversy was one depicting 'Bharat Mata' as a victim of #MeToo movement. Another, titled Gauri Lankesh, shows pen holding the RSS pants, while a person hiding the Trishul. One of the painting also deteriorates Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Several BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leaders have condemned the event and demanded legal action against the centenarian old college. BJP leader H Raja and Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan also condemned the exhibition and demanded legal action against the college. H Raja also said that this exhibition was organised by Naxals who force people to convert to Christianity and insult Hindus and their culture.

“We are deeply pained, saddened and equally anguished that the venue to conduct a cultural event, Veethi Virudhu Vizha held on 19th and 20th Jan 2019 has been misused, our illustrious and pluralistic campus was used for derogative exhibits against a particular religious group, social institution, political party and the country’s leadership,” read the statement.

“Loyola College is an institution of excellence that has cherished the plural values and ethos of the country with equal importance to each constituent member of the family where majority of our brethren are from the largest religious group. We do not advocate or support anything that tantamount to disturbing peace and tranquillity of the society that we render our service to,” it added.
