New Delhi, May 7: Five labourers were admitted to a hospital after they fell unconscious following inhalation of toxic gas while cleaning a septic tank in Delhi. Two labourers died during treatment, others are battling for their life at the hospital, news agency ANI reported.

The labourers lost consciousness while cleaning a septic tank in Rohini area. They were rushed to Sanjay Gandhi hospital where two of them died. Three others were undergoing treatment. Manual scavenging is an offence under the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013. In February, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal flagged off a fleet of 200 sewer cleaning machines.

Delhi Cabinet Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam had also conveyed a meeting with experts from IIT, Delhi Technological University (DTU), New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and Delhi Cantonment Board among others to discuss the possibilities and the need of robotic solution to the sewer cleaning task.
