New Delhi, August 13: The Delhi Police on Monday saved the life of a serving 35-year-old soldier of 101 Engineering Regiment by creating a Green Corridor in Delhi. The soldier has been suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM), a condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and cannot pump blood effectively. According to a tweet by the Delhi Traffic Police, the soldier has been waiting for a donor at the R R Hospital since 12th July 2018.
The donor, whose heart was to be brought to Delhi, was declared brain dead on August 13, 2018, at PGI, Chandigarh. Usually, organs are transported via a green corridor to Delhi and within the city. According to a tweet by the Delhi Traffic Police, the heart was brought to Delhi through a special Air Force Dornier Jet aircraft.
In a well-planned and coordinated move by the TI/Delhi Cantt. And TI/Palam Airport, a green corridor was provided on the route of 6 km to take the organ from a technical area Air Force Station in Palam to R R Hospital in Delhi Cantt.
It must be noted that a heart needs to be successfully replanted into the recipient within 4 hours of its retrieval from the donor. In this case, the distance was covered in 6 mins which would have taken more than 30 minutes on a regular course. The heart was retrieved at PG Chandigarh at 10 am and was into the operation theatre of Delhi’s RR Hospital at 11:15 am.
