New Delhi, July 1: Tension prevailed in Old Delhi's Hauz Qazi area on Monday after a dispute over parking took a communal turn. People of two communities reportedly clashed with each other on Sunday evening after news spread that a person from the minority community was thrashed and forced to chant 'Jai Shri Ram' by a group of people. A 100-year-old temple in Hauz Qazi area was also vandalised during clashes.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa, clashes erupted following a scuffle over parking. "After some altercation &scuffle over a parking issue in Hauz Qazi, tension arose b/w two groups of people from different communities. We have taken legal action & all efforts are being made to pacify feelings &bring about amity. People are requested to help in restoring normalcy (sic)," he tweeted. A video was widely shared purportedly showing a man allegedly being beaten up by some people, who were suspected to be drunk, over a parking issue. As the video went viral, people from two communities clashed with each other, triggering communal tension in the area. Following the quarrel, some people vandalised the temple in the area, triggering communal tension, the police said. Cops said they are looking into the matter and have tightened security in the area to ensure no untoward incident happens. A couple of Bajrang Dal activists were detained following the incident, said a report.
