New Delhi, Aug 2: A 17-year-old boy studying in a school in Delhi's Krishna Nagar was rushed to hospital on Thursday after his classmate stabbed him using a pencil life. The victim is reported to be out of danger, but will remain admitted over the next couple of days.
The accused, who stabbed the teenager in his waist and legs, was detained and sent for counselling. Police has not confirmed whether a case has been framed against him.
The incident was reported at around 10am, when the students had gathered in the school ground for the assembly. Eye-witnesses claimed that the duo, who live nearby, were involved in a heated verbal-duel while the assembly was underway. Shortly, the students heard the cry of the victim who was found stabbed with a pencil life.
The accused was immediately separated from the victim and taken away from the spot. The school principal rushed the injured boy to the nearest government hospital.
Violence and physical abuse is a widespread phenomena in schools in India. According to a study commissioned by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) in 2007 found two-third of school students in low-income group suffering from physical violence at least at one point of their school life.
"A 2010 study among 1,040 boys aged 10–16 years living in Mumbai found that more than 8 out of 10 boys had been victims of violence; two-thirds of boys aged 12–14 years in a cluster of low-income schools in India said they had experienced at least one form of violence in school over the past three months (including violence perpetrated by peers)," a UNICEF report said.
