New Delhi, October 3: Unexpected showers and thunderstorms drenched the national capital on Thursday evening as heavy rains were witnessed post 7 pm. Following this, traffic congestions were reported at several places and commuters were seen taking shelter at several locations in the metropolitan areas. Following the heavy showers, flight operations remained suspended between 7.56 pm to 8.22 pm at Indira Gandhi International Airport.

According to the reports, eyewitness claim that this has been the heaviest downpour in the national capital this monsoon season. Due to the sudden showers, the temperature declined and waterlogging at various places were witnessed. Among the places that witnessed severe rain include Moti Bagh, Palam, Rajpath, Greater Kailash, Dwarka and other places. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the country received the highest season rainfall in the last 25 years. The weather agency further informed that the rainfall recorded in September this year (152% of LPA) was the highest after 1917 (165% of LPA), which is after 102 years. "After 1994 (110% of LPA), rainfall received in 2019 (110% of LPA) is the highest season rainfall received by the country as a whole", the IMD said in its 2019 Southwest Monsoon Season Rainfall Forecast report.
